New Innovative Mesothelioma Treatment Study in England Needs Participants

April 25, 2014

What does mesothelioma treatment have in common with the poem that begins “Oh to be in England, now that April’s there?” Basically the fact that it’s April and there’s a very interesting mesothelioma treatment clinical trial underway in England that is now recruiting participants. The clinical trial is being done at the Experimental Cancer Medicine Center of the Sheffield Teaching Hospital in Sheffield, a city in South Yorkshire 144 miles from London. What makes this clinical trial interesting is the novel approach to mesothelioma treatment. The researchers are testing using a catheter to … [Read more...]

Spinal Procedure May Offer Malignant Mesothelioma Pain Relief

March 27, 2014

One of the worst parts of malignant mesothelioma is the physical pain it brings. It is tragic that malignant mesothelioma cuts life short.  The tragedy is compounded when severe physical pain interferes with daily living and prevents the full enjoyment of the time that remains.  Mesothelioma pain is draining, distracting and just plain awful. Now there is new evidence that a spinal procedure may provide pain relief for malignant mesothelioma patients.  Called cordotomy, it is a surgical procedure that disables selected pain-conducting pathways in the spinal cord, in order to eliminate … [Read more...]

Low Participation in Clinical Trials May Threaten Progress on New Mesothelioma Treatments

January 30, 2014

Discovery of new and better malignant mesothelioma treatments that could lessen the impact of the disease and even increase life expectancy is the hope of all mesothelioma patients and their families. At present the options for malignant mesothelioma treatments are limited.  Medical research to improve and expand malignant mesothelioma treatment remains crucial. So it was startling to read in an Associated Press article that there’s a crisis in cancer research because researchers can’t get enough people to test new treatments. One of every 10 clinical trials for adults with cancer ends … [Read more...]

How Massage Therapy Can Benefit Mesothelioma Patients

January 21, 2014

Living with malignant mesothelioma shouldn’t mean living without the simple pleasures life still can offer.  If anything, living with malignant mesothelioma can make those simple pleasures all the more meaningful. And how very nice it is when medical science affirms that one of those pleasures – massage therapy - may actually be good for those living with cancer including malignant mesothelioma. Massage therapy used to be considered just a New Age touchy-feely indulgence but scientific research shows massage produces measurable health benefits.  Some of these have just been assumed to carry … [Read more...]

American Cancer Society Releases New US Cancer Statistics

January 9, 2014

Malignant mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is 100% attributable to exposure to asbestos, a toxic material in industrial products.  This year between 2,500 and 3,000 US citizens will be diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma.  However, malignant mesothelioma, an unjust and devastating disease, is part of the big picture of cancer statistics in the United States. The American Cancer Society has just released its annual review of cancer statistics.  Overall, they state that the death rate from cancer in the US has declined steadily during the past two decades. The cancer death rate for men … [Read more...]

New Antibody Treatment Shows Preliminary Promise in Malignant Mesothelioma Patients

October 7, 2013

A small but encouraging clinical study may hold some promise for patients coping with malignant mesothelioma that has not responded to chemotherapy treatment.   The study was just reported in the October issue of the British medical journal The Lancet Oncology. One of the most exciting aspects of the study is the fact that it was done on human volunteers with malignant mesothelioma.  Typically studies of this type use laboratory mice or fruit flies as study subjects making the applicability of the results to the human body uncertain.  Less exciting is that the study size was relatively small … [Read more...]

Promising New Mesothelioma Treatment Shows Favorable Results in Lab Study

September 16, 2013

A promising new mesothelioma treatment targeting only malignant cells showed favorable results in a preliminary study on laboratory mice, report researchers at the University of Vermont Medical College. If the results can be replicated in humans, this could be a significant step to a breakthrough therapy for this currently incurable asbestos-caused cancer. “Effective treatment of malignant mesothelioma remains an unmet clinical need,”[1] the study researchers state in their paper published this week in the online journal BMC-Cancer. With grant funding from the Mesothelioma Applied Research … [Read more...]
