Scientists Highlight Need for Better Research on Radiotherapy for Mesothelioma Pain Management

January 13, 2014

mesothelioma painMuch of the mesothelioma pain people suffer is emotional.  Rightfully so.  Emotional mesothelioma pain will range from anger about the unlawful asbestos exposure that caused the disease to sorrow over what it has done to you. These are issues that you as a mesothelioma patient and your family will have to continue to reckon with. And that Kazan Law can help you with in terms of compensation through justice.  But physical mesothelioma pain also needs to be addressed.  Medical science offers ways to alleviate mesothelioma pain symptoms.  One of these is radiotherapy.

A new study published in the journal Lung Cancer discusses the need for research evidence to optimize the use of radiotherapy for the treatment of pain associated with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland reviewed published studies on mesothelioma pain and radiotherapy by searching databases going back to 1974. To be included in their review, the study had to focus on malignant pleural mesothelioma pain and radiotherapy given “with the intent of improving pain.” The study also had to report doses and fractionation of the radiotherapy and whether the pain was alleviated.

The researchers found eight studies on mesothelioma pain and radiotherapy that met their criteria. But they also found that the studies were not conclusive enough to serve as the basis for a standard treatment protocol.  They conclude, “No high quality evidence currently exists to support radiotherapy in treating pain in MPM (malignant plural mesothelioma).”[1]

Pointing out the need for better research does not mean that radiotherapy is ineffective.   By reducing the size of tumors, radiotherapy may help relieve pressure on the lungs and chest, reducing pain and making it easier for the patient to breathe, although the benefits are usually temporary.

The Scottish team highlights the need for better-designed studies to help clinicians use radiotherapy more effectively in mesothelioma pain management. These studies should focus on modern radiotherapy techniques, they state, and “clear pain endpoints” to provide a more accurate picture of the current best radiotherapy techniques and optimal dosages.
