Here’s Why Mesothelioma Patients Benefit from Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November 5, 2014

lung cancerNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Here’s why mesothelioma patients should know about it. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that develops, as a result of asbestos exposure, in the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. Mesothelioma can affect cells that line the heart or the abdomen. But 70% to 90% of all mesothelioma causes malignancy in the pleural lining of the lungs. So mesothelioma is for most patients a type of lung cancer. Each year there about 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed.

Raising Awareness of Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer Awareness Month brings attention to the fight against lung cancer in the United States and recognition of those whose lives have been impacted by this disease. Across the U.S., lung cancer groups have activities planned to highlight the need for innovations in research, earlier detection and better treatments for lung cancer.

Asking Congress to Increase Lung Cancer Research Funding

With continued investments in federal research, there is a greater chance for hope. The key to saving the lives of lung cancer patients starts with funding research to advance early diagnosis and develop new and more effective treatment options.

There are many exciting developments that may lead to breakthroughs in early detection and treatment options—but only if Congress invests in funding for lung cancer research.

The American Lung Association is leading a campaign as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month urging lung cancer patients and their families to write to Congress asking support for research.

“Let your members of Congress know that we need to continue our national commitment to cancer research. Please take a moment and send a letter to urge Congress to better invest in funding for cancer research.”

Connecting With Other Lung Cancer Patients

Every year during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Lung Cancer Alliance coordinates a grassroots effort with lung cancer patients, their families, lung cancer survivors and those who have lost loved ones to cancer. This year their annual Shine a Light on Lung Cancer event takes place on November 13 in communities all over the country.

“For many, Shine a Light provides comfort knowing that they are not alone. Through Shine a Light, they are able to experience a growing community of supportive and caring individuals. The lighting of the flashlights to honor survivors and loved ones is the highlight of the evening. Shine a Light is a free event open to all,” their website states.
